Operates at full volume approximately one-tenth of a second after pressure is released.

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION

The glycerin inside the bulb has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than the glass bulb. Thus, when heated, it expands faster than the glass, causing the glass to shatter. The water pressure then pushes the retainer out of the way.

Note: The bulb does not suffer any ill effects from cold temperatures - the glycerin inside will not allow the bulb to freeze. If one activates in cold weather, it's most likely due to the high pressures that result from water freezing in a fixed volume (e.g., the pipe).
