PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
BACKGROUND:	While many forms of radiation are invisible, Tritium emits radiation visible to the human eye, making it perfect for exit sign applications. The minimum brightness of these signs is more than twice the level required by UL and NFPA and is very visible in darkened areas. Their light may not be as bright during the day, but the high contrast ratio of the face colors makes the sign very visible, even in daylight.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:	These exit signs contain a gas called Tritium. Tritium is an isotope of Hydrogen (atoms of an element which have different masses are called isotopes of that element). The atoms of this isotope decay and in doing so emit radiation. But do not worry, the radiation emitted by these signs is very weak and cannot even penetrate the outer layer of your skin. In addition, the gas is contained within borosilicate (hard) glass internally coated with zinc sulfide phosphor, which further protects you from exposure. The Tritium contained in these signs would only pose a health risk if it were ingested.
